Kind hearted six-year-old Henry Peterken and mum Carrie-Anne are cycling 18 miles from Newark to Lincoln in the last week of August to raise funds for Rainbow Trust which provides vital support to families with a seriously ill child.
Cycling from their home in Newark to Henry’s grandparents’ house in Lincoln, Henry and Carrie-Anne are hoping to raise £200 for the charity.
Carrie-Anne says:
“This is Henry’s first fundraising activity and he was really keen to raise money for poorly children, so when we came across Rainbow Trust and learned how they provide help and support to families with really sick children it seemed like the most suitable choice.”
Carrie-Anne and Henry anticipate the 20-mile journey will take between three and four hours and they are currently using the weekends to train for the ride, and plan to build up the distance over the summer holidays.
Carrie-Anne says; “I am a keen cyclist and have done several charity bike rides in the past, so I am hoping by doing this together with Henry he will be inspired to do more in the future! Henry has enjoyed biking from a very young age and was able to ride without stabilizers from the age of three so this seems a very appropriate challenge for both of us.
“It is a long way for a six-year-old to bike but we are building up the distance gradually on our training rides which will become more frequent when the summer holidays start. Henry is very confident on his bike and I have been teaching him how to ride safely on the roads as well as enjoy the many cycle tracks near where we live, so I am sure he will succeed.”
Oonagh Goodman, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Rainbow Trust said; “We are so grateful to young Henry and his mum Carrie-Anne for choosing to support Rainbow Trust. On behalf of everyone at the charity we want to wish them both every success in their chosen challenge of biking from Newark to Lincoln. Every pound raised really does count, particularly in these difficult times. All the money raised by Henry and his mum will help Rainbow Trust to fund vital support to families with a life-threatened or terminally ill child.”
Rainbow Trust supports families who have a child with a life-threatening or terminal illness. When a child has a serious illness, family life is turned upside down and time becomes more precious than ever. Rainbow Trust pairs each family with an expert Family Support Worker who enables them to make the most of time together, giving them practical and emotional support, whenever they need it, for as long as is needed. The COVID-19 pandemic piled further unimaginable pressure onto these parents and children, and the charity’s Family Support Workers continue to provide a lifeline to them.
